July 02, 2022 Let's suppose people can fillet fish into pieces without sympathy because fish seem to lack emotional expressions and voices. In contrast, a dog has a range of facial expressions and a unique voice, so we can easily sympathize with their emotional expression. I also imagine that humans might interpret some emotions from a machine's face and expressions if an android improved its facial movements and had a voice, even cries. Conceivably, some people could be hesitating to disassemble that machine. If truth be told, I scarcely believe those machines can think like human beings. Furthermore, it must be determined whether something is living or non-living depending on a cell. Perhaps we should get more connected with creatures in our everyday lives. I water the plants on the balcony almost every day and love to watch some birds in the park. Living things and humankind constantly influence each other in the environmental system. Additionally, we should pay attentio...

Memories and Time

Image
June 26, 2022 We have a variety of memories. If you went to your university after a long time, that architecture might remind you of your university days there. Of course, young students don't know who you are. They're complete strangers to you, but you may feel the people in your memories there. As for me, I grew up in public housing in my city. I have various memories there, although those buildings were demolished a long ago because of a redevelopment project. I feel like I lost a part of my hometown in my mind. I try to see things from a different perspective. Everyone knows that there are a lot of historic buildings in Europe. I assume that Asian people may face difficulties in European countries even though they have families and good friends. I would also say that historic architecture stands with memories of Europeans. Namely, they live with their long-term histories. Globalization encourages young people to move from rural areas to big cities for their benefit. They...

Complexity

June 17, 2022 I like to go to a popular coffee shop chain. Baristas seem to be always polite and get their work done fast. Furthermore, they made a well-designed menu, so I can easily find something looks delicious on the menu. But on the other hand, I also like to go to a privately owned coffee shop partly because they occasionally give me exceptional service, such as a dessert gift. A successful company generally excels at producing well-made designs for customers. When I walk into a large railway station in Japan, I can easily recognize that there must be an intricate railway system there. Additionally, it is always so busy and crowded every day. Despite the complexity, most passengers could find routes effortlessly to their destinations chiefly because sign systems have already been arranged well. How can I explain an exceptional state to other people? The one fact I wanted to say is that we have been faced with global crises for more than two years. This unusual situation r...

Possibilities

Image
June 12, 2022 An elderly Japanese man and I discussed the parent lottery (親ガチャ) last year. It became a hot topic in the previous autumn in Japan, and I suddenly remembered that I had read “Being and Time” by German philosopher Martin Heidegger a long time ago during the discussion. So I said to him that babies are born in this world every day. According to Heidegger, we were thrown here first, and then we will resolve to throw ourselves into this world every moment. If memory serves, the philosopher said that kind of thing. Heidegger is a great thinker to me, but I would also say that his thoughts tend to be controversial because his philosophy has an affinity with a state of exception. I suppose that wild animals live their lives honestly, and therefore, we may also need to be ready to accept all the outcomes in every situation. However, humans always seek the causes of randomness. Ordinary people may feel at ease when they receive convincing answers about their own difficulties, and ...

Social Environment

Image
June 08, 2022 Regarding an industrialized society, I told my Japanese friends once that a developed society promotes specializations as a set of separate processes by different groups. For example, there are a lot of vending machines here. I suppose that engineers can design and assemble them, then the logistics staff delivers and installs those machines on the spots. In addition, drivers fill up a vending machine when needed, and thus we could buy canned coffee anytime, anywhere. I could say that technological change led people to construct new frameworks for society, and therefore, our lives have become more convenient than before. In other words, it's hard to improve our well-being effectively without moderate social reforms. If society faced a fundamental crisis due to war or a natural disaster, social systems would break, and we must be thrown into utter confusion. I imagine ordinary people would attempt to procure today's foods in a very uncertain situation. I don't ...

The Question Concerning Health

Image
June 05, 2022 Diseases might be defined by society. I sometimes imagine that one particular condition did not use to be regarded as a disease before, and now medical experts may define it as a general illness after much deliberation. As a result, it becomes a social issue that should be resolved. The views of life and death might vary depending on each country. I also think that every country has different healthcare systems, and hence it is no wonder that foreign people have different opinions on the particular healthcare policy. When it comes to a treatment strategy, doctors will search on an ongoing basis to determine individual factors that influence specific physical conditions. My well-being varies contingent on possibilities based on that appropriate medical approach. Thanks to healthcare workers and systems for public health, we can maintain good health and live in a cleaner environment. Also, new medical technologies can contribute to the success of healthcare services ...

Ordinary People

May 19, 2022 My mother has a physical disability and was hospitalized for tests last October. I still remember a young doctor who told me, “Your mother has a very unusual type of heart, and thus I will test it carefully.” After that, she decided to have heart surgery last November, and then another doctor showed us some risks of heart surgery on the process of informed consent before the operation. Actually, I was afraid of it, but we agreed to have surgery because we trusted the hospital. I do not intend to criticize someone at all. Thanks to the medical staff and the Japanese healthcare system, my mother has recovered from heart disease. When it comes to considering uniqueness, almost all people subconsciously presume the existence of ordinary people (I don't know why, but this reminds me of the normal distribution). It will be meaningful to them if someone tries to compare an average person and themselves in society. I'd also say that most Japanese people seem to make great...
